I would think that you could get away with something similar (6 of 8 cores) but run at about 60% load. Typical RAM usage is about 40-50% and this doesn't fluctuate like the CPU. It typically runs at about 25-30% CPU capacity but every so often it maxes out and I can only fix this by restarting. The VM has 6 of the 8 cores on a Xeon 1230v5 and 6gb of RAM. There are tweaks you can do to bring the CPU demand down which really work, without them, things go a bit crazy.

I run 5 IP cameras with BI in a Windows 10 VM hosted on Unraid with a Nvidia P2000 on GPU passthru to handle hw encoding. Every time I got into it, it was like I had to reconfigure everything again. I was comparing it and BlueCherry and while BlueCherry handled all the cameras better, I just really hated the interface.
It's hard to remember, but I think trying to view it on a phone or tablet was also terrible. I remember having troubles adding half my cameras, and those that were would keep dropping out. So I wanted to remove that from my complaint list since almost 3 years have passed. it looks like I downloaded Shinobi July 19th. I also want to add a multi-TB drive for extended archiving (may be external).ĮDIT: Since, I had to go back. I might setup a second camera viewer in another room. Then I'll migrate all the cameras to BI, replace the NVR with something showing the dashboard, and be happy. My next plans is to build a sort of standalone web page showing just the camera streams and a link to log in to blue iris directly for viewing past footage.

I temporarily hoooked it up to patch cable draped across the room and the lag cleared up. I did run all 6 without issue, however on the wifi, once I got past the 4th camera, all the cameras framerate dropped or lagged 20-30s behind reality. I have 3 additional network cameras tied into an Q-See NVR. Mine is currently on wifi and supporting 3 cameras.

Lifetime license, massive camera support, html5 viewer, apps for android & iphone, can be integrated with homeassistant in different ways, and it just works. The software is $70 and sometimes they have discount codes available. These can be found on ebay for under $300 (i5, 8-16gb of ram) which is on par with a Q-See NVR for price. I really don't like running Windows, but after trying all sorts of camera NVR/DVRs and open-source systems like ZoneMinder Shinobi BlueCherry, I eventually set up a dedicated windows 10 pc running BlueIris.
